'You are entitled to it': Family leaves 19-year-old out of vacation plans

What would you do if your family planned a surprise trip for everyone… except for you? It's an incredibly awkward situation to be in, as u/EEZAK04 explained. 

It's pretty hard to plan an entire vacation for a family and accidentally leave a whole family member out of the planning. That's what makes this person's mildly infuriating story an intriguing read. They were upset with their workplace. Since their mom informed them that the vacation is taking place in just two weeks, they're scrambling to try and join them. Naturally, their workplace isn't thrilled about being asked for a sudden of absence to go on vacation: they actually require one month's notice for these things. Since their job straight-up said they won't have their vacation time granted, this person is seriously annoyed. 

But commenters had bigger questions for this person. Many wondered what had happened to make their family omit them from vacation planning. Others wondered if the original poster could just quit their job in order to join in the vacation festivities anyway. A quick glance at their profile revealed that the poster was just 19 years old, so luckily they still have plenty of years in their future to plan a trip all for themselves, family or no family.

    qalpi Absolutely bizarre that no one is advocating pushing back on the company. Your PTO is part of your compensation. You're not asking for permission to be on leave, you're telling them you are going to be on leave. You are entitled to it. End of story.

    The company s ks if you are owed holiday and aren't being allowed to take it. Tell them politely that this is really important to you and if they cannot grant it then you will be handing in your notice. And find another job on your return. This will also be a wake-up call for your mother if you quit your job over it - win- win.
